How Do I Make My Mac Discoverable For Airdrop

Posted on

AirDrop lets you wirelessly beam almost anything from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to any other recent Apple device. It uses Bluetooth 4.x for power-efficient broadcast and discovery, and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for speedy transfer. I've disabled Handoff, changed my AirDrop availability to 'Contacts Only,' but I'm not able to make my iMac non-discoverable without turning Bluetooth off. I need Bluetooth since I use a Magic Mouse. Previous versions of OS X allowed you to disable Bluetooth discoverability, but Yosemite apparently decided to remove that option for users. Thus, when your find AirDrop not working on your Mac, you should also check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your device. Solution 3: Check your AirDrop settings. After turning on AirDrop, you need to set the option Allow me to be discovered by as Contacts Only or Everyone. If you want to share files between your Mac and a new device, you should choose Everyone to make your device discoverable. Hi Ingrid - welcome to the forum! I love using AirDrop and have exchanged files between my Macs and iDevices in all combinations (all are hardware & software compatible), but the Apple technology is 'flaky' at times for me - works fine one time and then a NO GO - irritating - so, just for starters and if not already done, checkout this Apple KB Article and make sure that your Mac (did not tell.

  • You configure Bluetooth by clicking the Bluetooth icon at the top of your Mac’s screen. The list you see includes options to turn Bluetooth on and off, make your Mac discoverable by other Bluetooth devices, and browse for files on Bluetooth devices. You can also open the Bluetooth preferences screen, which is also available from System.
  • Exit Do Not Disturb mode to make your device discoverable again via AirDrop. On iOS, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and deselect Do Not Disturb icon in Control Center. On your Mac, swipe from the right edge of the trackpad, or click the Notification Center icon in the menu bar, click Notifications, scroll down to reveal the Do Not.
  • Release since you see the Apple icon. Wait (it takes couple minutes) Log-in screen will show several options then, including Disk Utility. Select it - click on the Macintosh Disk in next windows (be careful: NOT CHOOSE THE HIDDEN IMAGE DISK) - click Erase. Exit the Disk Utility windows. Now, you are in the initial screen. Choose ReInstall Mac. This takes you 3-4 hours with a good internet connection.

MacBook Pro :: AirDrop Not Discoverable On It

Dec 12, 2014

I have a Macbook Pro running on OS X Yosemite. Yesterday I was at a meeting with other people using the same laptop and their AirDrop all works (when you click on the AirDrop icon it starts to scan like a radar. Mine however, doesn't do anything even though bluetooth is on and I have changed the settings to say 'Allow me to be discovered by: everyone.' I do notice also that my AirDrop icon is blue in the window instead of gray like everyone else's. This is what it looks like when I click on it. No scanning happens. I can't see other devices and they can't see me.

MacBook Air :: Make USB To Boot Up Mac From PC?

I was trying to delete partitions on my hard drive to get it ready for a clean Yosemite install. All of a sudden the screen went grey and after a considerable amount of time I turned off the MacBook Air and then turned it back on. A grey screen with a folder and '?' showed up. I don't have much experience with Macs, but I know enough that something happened to the Boot files. I don't have any other Macs. Is there a way to make a bootable drive on a PC? MacBook Air :: Both Software And Accessories Are Make For The Air?

Oct 29, 2010

First forum post, and my question: what items would you recommend for a Mac newbie or returnee thinking of buying a 64gb 11' MBA? Software that is small in size, free or cheap but very useful (esp. utilities, productivity, games and music/video). Accessories that are small, light, and a good value. I am particularly interested if the Apple Superdrive is the best out there for the money, and multipurpose usb/sd hubs.Another way of looking at it is, if you were buying a 4gb/64gb Air for a friend and had $200 to outfit it, what would be essential enough for you to include?

MacBook Pro :: How To Make It Run Smooth And Fast

How Do I Make My Mac Discoverable For Airdrop Free

Here's my set up:
Macbook Pro (Early 2010) running 10.6.5 w/ 2.56GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HD w/ 290GB free space.
There have been times when I'm just running iTunes and the wheel of death will come on, or i'm on Chrome or FF w/ 2 other programs running and will get the wheel again and will get locked for about 1-2min. Before I hadn't had too many problems on a different MBP with lower specs, this one is higher yet is slow. I don't understand what the problem is because I also monitor my CPU and when it locks up the CPU remain at normal. Also, flash has always been lagging on here but will freeze for 5-10sec while audio keeps playing. I possibly think it's the Hard Drive which is a WD Blue Scorpio w/ 5400 RPM.

I am a PC user (please don't flame me) but am getting ready to make the leap into a MBA which will be my travel laptop. Are there any resources that anyone can recommend on co-existing between PC and Mac. I'm told its no big deal to transfer files like Word, Excel and the like between the two, but quite frankly I'm a little nervous as this is my first venture into Apple. But the MBA just blew me away and now I'm pretty psyched. I've been lurking here a while and have learned a lot but need to get comfortable existing in 2 different worlds.

MacBook Air :: How To Make Screen Look Larger

Feb 22, 2009

Love my MBA but couldn't resist the temptation to pick up an HP 10' netbook since the Amazon price was pretty cheap ($399). It's a nice little machine which I can throw in my briefcase. However, do a little bit of work on this ten incher and then open up the MBA, and suddenly my 13' MBA looks looks huge! Each machine clearly has it's role. The netbook is fine for my daily train trip to work and to shlep around. It would not accompany me on a trip or for times requiring a lot of work and certainly does not sit in the same universe of power as the MBA, but as Randy Jackson would say, 'It's a'right'. I think the MBA has won my heart.

MacBook Pro :: Would Upgrading To 8gb Of RAM Will It Make Faster?

Oct 6, 2009

Just wanted to ask the guys that have 8GB of RAM in their mbp if it was worth it? Running my 17' mbp with 4GB of RAM via 24' LED ACD in dual monitor mode running 6 spaces and especially running VMware fusion just to run light programs such as access 2007 and excel seems to tax my 17' in the memory department.
The 17' still runs pretty good but I do notice that under activity monitor the memory seems to have a huge amount of page outs and the color wheel shows up once in a while. Would upgrading to 8gb of RAM be the remedy? Will it make the whole os that much faster? I would think so but I'd like some opinions, thanks.
I would just use my Mac Pro thats on my sig but I have it connected to my hdtv most of the time and use it through there. I'd like to use dual monitor with my notebook for my courses. I hate transferring school work data from the 17' to the mac pro on a daily basis.

AirDrop is a service that Apple added to iOS and Mac devices to share files since iOS 7 and Mac OS X lion (10/7). By using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, AirDrop enables you to transfer files from iPhone to Mac in a wireless way. This post tells you how to use AirDrop and an AirDrop alternative to transfer files from iPhone to Mac, including all the models of Mac computer such as iMac, Mac Pro, Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, etc. Meanwhile, this post also provides you solutions for some common problems you may meet when using AirDrop. Let’s see in 3 parts.

Part 3: Problems You May Meet When Using AirDrop

There are some problems that you may encounter when you AirDrop from iPhone to MacBook, including AirDrop not showing up in Control Center, can’t AirDrop music, Mac can't find iPhone and so on. If you encounter one of them, please keep reading, you can find the solution.

1. AirDrop not showing up in Control Center.

Some iPhone/iPad users reported that they couldn’t find AirDrop in Control center. Actually, it’s just a common issue that can be easily fixed. Just got to Settings app and find Restrictions item to allow AirDrop service running on your iPhone.

2. AirDrop not showing up in finder.

There are only specific Mac models that could be compatible to use AirDrop. If AirDrop doesn't show up in finder, maybe it is the Mac you have is not compatible with AirDrop. Below is the list of Mac models which support AirDrop.

MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer), MacBook Air (Late 2010 or Newer), MacBook (Late 2008 or newer, iMac (Early 2009 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer), Mac Pro (Early 2009 with Airport Extreme card or Mid 2010).

As for other Mac computers, as long as the Mac is vaguely modern with a somewhat recent Mac OS or Mac OS X release that has Bluetooth, AirDrop works just fine without hassle.

3. Mac can't find iPhone.

If Mac can't find iPhone, please try to restart both devices. If not working, then make sure AirDrop is set to 'Everyone' instead of 'Contacts Only'.

4. Can’t AirDrop Music.

This is one problem that you cannot solve because Apple doesn’t allow you to share music directly from iPhone to another place via AirDrop. The file types that you can share via AirDrop are limited actually. AirDrop only supports sharing photos, videos, locations, under this circumstances, you can use a professional transfer tool, such as AnyTrans – transfer 20+ file types.

5. Some other problems.

You may drop into some other troubles when using AirDrop. You can read our previous post, AirDrop Not Working, which shows you some basic tips to fix issue of AirDrop not working on your iPhone.
